A favourite dish of the Japanese in summer is the eel fish, barbecue and dip into specially concocted sauce. The Japanese even have a designated day for this dish, 20th July. This dish is thought to replenish a body's energy saped by the hot summer.
However in recent years these Japanese eels have become more and more rare. Fifty years ago, 232tons could be harvested. 2 years ago, the quantity dropped to a mere 5tons. Now the demand is widely met by imports. But even then demand outstripped supply and prices for these eels have been rising.
In Japan, eels have already been listed as in danger of extinction. As of July, the International Union for Conservation and Nature (IUCN) has included these eels in their Red List of Threatened Species.
