Japanese are feeling their influence in the science and technology arena fading. According to a white paper, the share of Japanese science thesis in terms of quantity and quality has been decreasing. From 2009 to 2011, Japan was ranked 5th in the world in terms of no. of thesis published. The US was ranked 1st and China 2nd. In the ranking of thesis which are considered influential, Japan scored 7th while US scored 1st and China, 4th.
According to a report by the Swiss International Economic Development Research, in 1993 Japan was ranked 1st in economy and infrastructure competitiveness. 13years later, it was ranked 24th. This loss of competitiveness and relevance has prompted politicians to push for changes in the recent election.
