Under the new amendment (April) to the regulation on seniors employment, those who wish to continue to work in their current company until 65 years old are now allowed to.
Even then, with the average life span of the Japanese male at 79.94years old and female at 86.41years old, the average person still have a long way to go after their retirement. In a study targeting at persons above 60 years old, carried out by the government in '08, 37% answered that they would like to work on forever; 23% replied that they would like to work into their 70s; 9% said they want to work till 75.
The reemployment of seniors is seen as the answer to counter the drop in number in the labour pool. Keeping these seniors at work can also encourage them to stay healthy and thus lessening their need for medical and nursing care. Getting these seniors to work near their homes will give them a sense of belonging to their community. They have different levels of abilities and physical strength. Getting them to fit in with their employers is the key.
