As part of the Abenomics strategy, the road tax for K-cars (mini cars) will increase from the current ￥７，２００ to ￥１０、８００ from the fiscal year starting April 2015. This comes on top of the increase of 3% in GST that one has to pay come April 2014 for a new car.
To many, especially those living in the rural areas where public transport is not available, the K-car is a very essential household item. Many small businesses also rely on these mini vehicles to manage with operational costs.
On the other hand, road tax for bigger cars will remain unchange.
