Not under control

Asashi Shimbun, 7th October 2013

According to a research conducted by this newspaper, 76% of respondants do not think that the nuclear situation at Fukushima is under control.

Contraditory to what Mr. Abe had declared to the Olympics committee that the 'situation is under control', even among the supporters of Mr. Abe's cabinet, majority of the people (71%) do not believe that the situation is under control. In the Tohoku region, 81% of the people do not think that the situation is under control.

In another report about school lunches in Fukushima, some parents are voicing concerns about the locally produced rice used in these lunches. Since January 2013, Fukushima produced rice has been used in school lunches for the 24,000 students in the prefecture. It is a practice in Japan to use local produces where available for school lunches.

For parents who are worried about the safety of Fukushima produced rice, they are allowed to let their children bring their own rice to school.  So far, there are only 42 students who are bringing their own cooked rice to school out of the 24,000. Many kids and parents are unwilling to bring their own rice in fear of being ostracized by others. So even when parents are worried about the safety of the food served in school lunches, they have no choice but to go with the flow.
