Smart Phones in High School

Asahi Shinbum, 1st March 2014

More than 90% of first year high school students own a smart phone.  Out of 7,306 students studied, 96.7% of them own a smart phone. Althogether, 99.1% owns a mobile phone. In the study, it was found that majority of these students are somewhat or rather addicted to their mobiles.
Many high schools have policies of asking students to hand in their phones while they are in school. Students are not allowed to use their mobiles while in school and their mobiles will only be returned to them when they leave for home.
Some of the related problems revealed in this study are:  long period of time spent on mobiles; drop in school grades; shorter sleeping time. In the wake of troubles relating to social messaging applications like Line, schools are calling parents to cooperate in guiding their kids to the correct use of mobiles.
