The presumed effects of an eruption by Mount Fuji

In a digest corner in Asahi Shinbum, 28th February, 2014

The prefectures of Yamanashi, Shizuoka and Kanagawa, together with the national government, has worked out measures to be taken should Mount Fuji erupts. In the event that magma flows out, it is estimated that 750,000 people will be affected directly. Should the eruption occur on Shizuoka side, up to 238,000 may have to be evacuated.
It is estimated that ash from the eruption will reach Kanagawa and Tokyo area. In Kanagawa, ash of more than 30cm will accumulate, and more than 400,000 people will have to be evacuated. Life in Tokyo will come to a standstill.
Mount Fuji has erupted 100 times in the last 320 0years, an average of one eruption every 30 years. The last eruption occurred more than 300 years ago. Thus the next big one is expected to be around the corner.
