For over 30 years, expecting mothers were discouraged to take a dip in onsens. Until now, expecting mothers, together with people with heart illnesses, were included in the list of people who are advised not to enter onsen pools. The exact reason as to why expecting mothers were discouraged from dipping in the pools was not clear. In a recent update to Onsen practices, as there were no medical proofs that onsens are not good to a mother's or baby's health, the practice of discouraging expecting mothers from entering onsens has been reversed.
