The number of crows in Tokyo have dropped dramatically since 2001 when the city started taking steps to curb their growth. Crows were a nuisance in Tokyo in the 90s. There were so many of them on the streets, feeding on household garbage left on the streets for garbage collection. Blazoned by their numbers, they were known to have attacked people too.
Since then, the city had taken steps to cover up the garbage with nets or have residents deposit them in covered bins. Hawks were also introduced into the city as predators. Now crows are no more a common sight in Tokyo, but some experts have cautioned that their reduced numbers may lead to an unbalanced ecosystem, since crows also keep the insects population in check.
